Rowzat and Max

About Rowzat: She has been doing a tour of the Midwest for her life. She was born in Columbus, Ohio to Indian immigrant parents. Her family soon moved to Terre Haute, Indiana. Rowzat was an overactive toddler, earning the nickname of bumblebee from the neighbors who watched her buzz around. To this day, Rowzat is involved in a lot of stuff.

Rowzat’s brother was born in Terre Haute. In 1980, the Shipchandler family moved to Libertyville, Illinois. Rowzat attended junior high and high school there (by the way Marlon Brando also attended school at that same high school many years before). Rowzat attended Indiana University and earned a B.S. degree in Journalism and Political Science. While at IU, she managed never to attend any basketball games.

She came to Minnesota for graduate school in 1994. After earning a M.A. in Political Science, she decided to that she liked winter enough to stay in the Twin Cities. Since then, has worked at various nonprofit and government agencies. She is currently employed at The Saint Paul Foundation, a charitable foundation.

Rowzat maintains an active lifestyle. She finished an Olympic Distance triathlon this summer with her brother Riyaz. She is active in local politics and serves as chair of an Indian affiliate of the state Democratic party. She volunteers as a facilitator and brings together crime victims and offenders together to talk about the incident. Rowzat also likes to cook, read and garden. A few years ago, she won a coloring contest (in her age group) at a local ice cream establishment.

About Max: He grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, the youngest of three children. Max didn’t began talking until he was nearly three years old. His worried mother took Max to the pediatrician and the pediatrician told her that Max would eventually start talking and once that happened he wouldn’t stop. His doctor was right.

Max first came to Minnesota in 1990 to attend Carlton College, like his sister, brother and parents before him. He took a departure from the family career of physician and earned his degree in Political Science. One of teachers was a relatively young and politically liberal professor named Paul Wellstone. While Max was in college, Wellstone decided to make a run for the United State Senate. Everyone thought he was a long shot. Max worked on his campaign and when Wellstone won the 1990 election, Max moved back to the Washington DC area to work for his Senate office. During the next four years, Max had the opportunity to work for Wellstone and Representative Albert Wynn. He also got to travel to New Hampshire while on staff to the Tom Harken for President campaign.

After working for four years, Max decided to attend law school at American University. He earned his law degree and decided to come back to Minnesota. He clerked at the Minnesota Court of Appeals and then went to the Minnesota Office of the Attorney General. During this time Max was married and divorced. Max is currently in private practice as a criminal defense attorney (
www.dwi-legal.com) and owns too many neckties for Rowzat to count.

Max will be 39 years old on the day of the wedding.

About Rowzat and Max

They had their first date in June 2005. When they began talking, they were surprised that they hadn’t met before. Both of them had worked at the Minnesota Office of the Attorney General, at the same time, in the same building. Both of them had worked out at the same YWCA for several years. They had been involved in some of the same neighborhood organizations, though at different times. Max had even heard Rowzat’s name before. They were members of the same cooperative grocery store. They also knew dozens of people in common.

Rowzat and Max also shared a lot of common interests. They both liked outdoor activities. Both liked good food. Max would even help clean up after Rowzat made a mess cooking a gourmet meal.

Within a month or two of meeting, Max and Rowzat both knew that they had met the person they were going to spend their life with. They started talking to each other about this and made a decision to get married. They started shopping for engagement rings. After picking out the ring, Max took Rowzat out to a sumptuous dinner. They went back to Rowzat’s house and Max formally proposed. Rowzat, of course, accepted. They went to work on setting a wedding date.

Rowzat and Max plan to continue living in the Twin Cities. Neither plans to change his or her last name. Since, their last names both end in the same three letters, they suggest that people refer to them collectively as the “lers.”

Rowzat will be 34 and Max will be 39 years old on the day of the wedding.
